National Policy Debate: The Mojo Story

Mithilesh Kumar joined Barkha Dutt on The Mojo Story to debate the economic viability of the proposed Private Sector Job Reservation Bill.

Our Stance:
We argued that the mandate is practically infeasible and risks diverting attention from the core issue—the urgent need for urban infrastructure reform to drive genuine economic growth.

Bengaluru’s Pothole Pandemic: Why Are We Still Stuck? 🚦

From endless traffic jams to potholes that reappear days after repair, Bengaluru’s civic issues are a daily struggle for millions. But why does this keep happening despite changing governments and big promises?

In this eye-opening discussion, SALAR NEWS speaks with Mithilesh Kumar from the Civic Opposition of India to decode the root causes of the city's crumbling infrastructure. We move beyond the complaints to understand the systemic failures—from the lack of coordination between agencies to the absence of quality control.
The video also tackles the debate on "big ticket" projects like tunnel roads versus the desperate need for basic amenities like walkable footpaths and proper drainage. Most importantly, it highlights the one missing ingredient in solving these problems: active citizen participation.

Urgent Alert: Railway Land Encroachment Underway at Silk Board Sericulture Station, Kodathi, Bengaluru

Bengaluru's public land continues to face systematic takeover, and this time it's railway property adjacent to the Silk Board Sericulture Station Farm in Kodathi that's under threat.A recent on-ground video investigation reveals clear signs of deliberate encroachment by real estate interests, reportedly operating with local support. The footage documents a disturbing step-by-step pattern used to illegally occupy valuable government land:

  • Large-scale dumping of municipal garbage and household waste to degrade the site and discourage oversight.
  • Piling up of construction debris, broken bricks, concrete chunks, and soil mounds to artificially raise the ground level.
  • Progressive soil filling and leveling operations that slowly convert open land into plots appearing ready for future construction.

These tactics are not random — they form a well-known playbook in Bengaluru: first degrade and occupy, then fortify structures, and eventually drag the matter into court where delays (with India's staggering 53+ million pending cases) often allow the status quo to prevail permanently. The affected area belongs to Indian Railways — public land meant for infrastructure, expansion, or public use — not private real estate development. Once buildings rise or compound walls appear, reclamation becomes exponentially harder and more expensive.

Civic Opposition of India has escalated this matter by directly bringing it to the attention of:

  • Hon'ble Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw
  • Divisional Railway Manager, Bengaluru
  • Local MPs and Ministers including P. C. Mohan, D. K. Shivakumar, Siddaramaiah, Aravind Limbavali

The official RailwaySeva handle has already acknowledged the complaint and forwarded it to the concerned Divisional Railway Manager for necessary action.Time is critical. Swift physical demarcation, fencing, and eviction of dumped material are needed before boundary walls, temporary sheds, or "existing structures" claims solidify. Bengaluru cannot afford to lose any more public land to encroachment mafias. We call on the Railways Ministry, Karnataka Government, and local administration to act immediately and transparently. Public land belongs to the people — not to land grabbers.Save our railways land. Save Bengaluru's future.

3.5 Hours of Waiting, Zero Accountability: The Reality of Hosa Road Residents

Today, the residents of Hosa Road, South Bengaluru, gathered near the Kempegowda Statue in good faith, as requested by MLA M. Krishnappa’s team.
Over 350 citizens joined online and 50+ appeared in person, waiting patiently for over 3.5 hours to submit critical grievances regarding the ill-planned Hosa Road, dangerous craters, and never-ending traffic snarls.
Unfortunately, the MLA never showed up.
Mithilesh Kumar, representing the frustrated citizens, expressed deep disappointment: "Ignoring citizens who have waited hours just to be heard is against the democratic spirit of India. We expect @BJP4Karnataka to treat voters with dignity."
The disappointment has only fueled our resolve. The next plan of action is clear: We will mobilize 500+ residents to march directly to the MLA’s residence.
We thank every citizen for their patience. We remain united until our voices are heard.

The Case of the Missing 4 KM: Where Did the ₹9.5 Crore Go?

It is a simple math problem that the PWD Karnataka seems unable to solve.
Civic Opposition of India (previously Citizens Movement, East Bengaluru), has flagged a serious discrepancy in a road project connecting Dommasandra to Parappana Agrahara Central Jail.

  • The Tender: Improvements for 7 KM.
  • The Cost: ₹9.51 Crores (Agreement No. 44/2024-25).
  • The Reality: Only 3 KM has been completed. The remaining 4 KM remains incomplete and dangerous
Mithilesh raises a critical question in his formal complaint to the Chief Minister
"If the contract was for 7km and the funds were allocated, why is the work stopped at 3km? This raises grave concerns regarding the possible misuse of taxpayer money."
We are demanding an independent audit of this project immediately. The citizens of East Bengaluru deserve to know if they paid for a full road but received less than half.

Prioritize Commuters, Not Just Vehicles: A Call for Holistic Mobility on ORR

The recent ban on bike taxis has had a severe ripple effect on Bengaluru's Outer Ring Road (ORR). As Mithilesh Kumar, Founding Member of Civic Opposition of India, points out in The Times of India, average commute times have surged by 50-70% since the ban. This isn't just about traffic; it's an economic issue. IT professionals are missing crucial meetings and daily scrums, directly impacting productivity. Rather than an outright ban, the solution lies in formalizing and regulating bike taxis. We need a holistic mobility plan that includes: • More BMTC buses and restored footpaths. • Completion of BMRCL girder works and functioning traffic signals. • Last-mile connectivity via shared autos or mini feeder buses. As Mithilesh states, we need a shift in perspective: "Prioritise commuters, not just vehicles."

The Bengaluru Techie's Weekend: Recover or Protest?

It is a sobering reality for thousands of professionals in our city: Work 10-12 hours a day, endure 4-5 hours of traffic, and then spend weekends on the streets protesting for basic infrastructure.

Today, the citizens of Gattahalli and Chikkanayakanahalli are protesting against substandard roads that have made commuting a daily hazard.

Mithilesh Kumar, Founder of Civic Opposition of India, questions the sustainability of this model: "How did we reach this point where tax-paying citizens have to fight for the mere existence of a road? Is this the #BrandBengaluru we want to project to the world?"

We appeal to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the state administration to look beyond the headlines and address the ground reality. Our city deserves better than broken roads and lost hours.

🚨 Protest for Basics: Is the System Failing?

Residents of Chandapura, Anekal are on the streets today, not for luxury, but for basic roads. When citizens have to protest just to get a motorable path, we know the system is broken.

Mithilesh Kumar, Founder of Civic Opposition of India, weighs in on the crisis: "It is tragic that in a tech hub like Bengaluru, essentials require agitation. Perhaps this is the cost of prioritizing short-term 'freebies' over long-term infrastructure. We voted for free, now we pay the price with broken roads."

It's time to demand development, not just handouts.

When Survival Outweighs Bans: Citizens Protest for Basic Rights

In Bengaluru, protests might be restricted, but the desperation of citizens cannot be silenced. The residents of Chambenahalli, Sarjapur area have been forced to take to the streets—not out of choice, but out of necessity.

Mithilesh Kumar, Founder of Civic Opposition of India, highlighted the grim reality: "Citizens are forced to come out on the road for 'no roads'. When the infrastructure collapses completely, people have no option but to demand accountability."

The protest is directed against MLA Shivanna of Anekal, whose constituency has seen prolonged neglect. We are calling upon Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to look beyond the bans and see the ground reality.

When tax-paying citizens are denied motorable roads, protest becomes a duty.

Four Years of Silence: Why Bengaluru Desperately Needs its "Micro-Voice" Back

It has now been over four years since Bengaluru had an elected council to govern its affairs. As highlighted in a recent Times of India feature, "Elusive BBMP Election," the term of the last elected body ended on September 10, 2020. Since then, the city has been run by bureaucrats and MLAs, leaving a massive vacuum in local accountability.

The Core Issue:

While the government focuses on macro-projects and "Brand Bengaluru," the day-to-day reality for citizens is very different. This is exactly what our Founder, Mithilesh Kumar, pointed out when speaking to the Times of India about the campaign to demand immediate elections.

"We realized that without corporators, we don't have any voice to raise micro issues. Corporators know the grassroots but it's very difficult to even hold a meeting with the MLA."

Mithilesh Kumar, Founder, Civic Opposition of India

Why This Matters:

Mithilesh’s statement hits on the fundamental flaw in the current administration: The Accessibility Gap.

  1. The "Micro-Issue" Blindspot: MLAs manage constituencies of hundreds of thousands. They are policy-makers, not pothole-fixers. When a street light is broken, a drain is clogged, or garbage isn't picked up, these "micro-issues" are too small for an MLA's radar but are massive hurdles for the daily life of a citizen.
  2. The Missing Link: Corporators are the first line of defense. They live in the ward, know the specific streets, and are practically accessible. Without them, citizens are forced to navigate a bureaucratic maze or chase unreachable MLAs just to get basic services.

Our Stand:

At Civic Opposition of India, we believe that governance without local representation is not just inefficient—it is undemocratic. As Mithilesh stated, the delay in elections isn't just a political scheduling error; it is a systematic silencing of the grassroots voice.

We continue to stand with the Citizens Movement and all Bengaluru residents in demanding:

Conduct BBMP Elections Now.
